Embattled Karatina University vice chancellor Muchai Muchiri is likely to be charged in court after he underwent through seven hours grilling by Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission sleuths at Nyeri town regional office over graft and unethical allegations.
The VC is said to be worried as investigations are still on. Friends have deserted the VC at the hour of need. Even staff members at management level who were close to him have taken off, fearing that they may find themselves in trouble.
Ethics and EACC central region manager Charles Rasugu said the commission took the steps after receiving many complaints. “The complaints pertain to abuse of office and conflict of interest among others,” said Rasugu. The allegations also point to irregular promotions of officers at the university. Rasugu added that upon receiving and analysing the complaints, the EACC central region office commenced full scale probe into the complaints.
EACC has so far interviewed and recorded statements from various officials at the university including the chairman of the council Kobia Ataya. Prof Muchiri responded to EACC summonses and his statement was recorded to facilitate the completion of the ongoing investigations.
“The probe is still on and upon its completion, the EACC will compile a comprehensive report with recommendations to the DPP for the appropriate action in accordance with the law,” said EACC regional boss.
It is said that one of the main complaint is the Sh400 million construction of ultramodern library at the university in which contractors are said to have received huge amount of money in terms of advance payments.
The vice chancellor is said to have employed his wife at the institution and she draws a lot of money in form of salary and allowances. She is also said to have at a time been paid huge amount of money for an unpaid leave.
The vice chancellor together with his buddy Mathira MP Rigathi Gachagua are diehard supporters of the deputy president William Ruto. Conspicuously, the duo has been hobnobbing with Ruto virtually in all events that the deputy president has been presiding over in Mathira sub county.
