From Mauricio Pochettino to the (possible)future Manchester United manager, these people are set to take sport by storm in next 12 months

– The next 12 months sees huge events across the world of sport

– Established stars and ambitious youngsters can grab glory through 2019

– But who is the one sportsperson our reporters think will grab the headlines?

Anthony Joshua, Luka Modric, Lewis Hamilton, Jonny Sexton and Novak Djokovicwere among those who lit up 2018, and 2019 promises to be another wonderful year of sport ahead, with many huge events on the horizon.

But which sportsperson is THE ONE we won’t be able to take our eyes off this year? Our reporters have their say…

Naomi Osaka

This fascinating 21 year-old of Japanese and Haitian heritage who has spent most of her life in the US was the other player in the controversial US Open final, overshadowed by the behaviour of Serena Williams. It should not be forgotten that she played brilliantly to win it, and her usurping of Williams at Flushing Meadows could be followed by her succeeding the American great as the outstanding player in women’s tennis.

As she showed on that tumultuous night in New York, Osaka is equipped with a game that can take her to No 1. Already this year year she soared from a ranking of 68 to No 5. If she can withstand the pressure of expectation she may emerge as the player women’s tennis has been waiting for.

Mauricio Pochettino

Whatever the current Tottenham manager chooses to do next year, we are about to find out a lot about him. If he stays in London then he will come under ever increasing pressure to win a trophy, especially given that his team will soon be playing in a stadium they can actually call home again. If he leaves the club and moves to Manchester United then he will have even bigger questions to answer. Can he handle the scrutiny of life at a truly massive club? Can he be the first manager since Sir Alex Ferguson to bring some style back to Old Trafford. Whatever happens, it will not be dull.
