Detectives from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) based in Busia are now giving a chase to a gang that was captured on CCTV breaking into a car at Western Ambiance Hotel in Bumala, stealing Sh2.14 million.
According to the DCI, the victim had withdrawn the money from a bank in Busia town and was travelling to Kisumu through the interstate Kisumu Highway but made a stopover at a hotel before proceeding with the journey.
“In the 3 pm incident yesterday, the 47-yr-old victim had withdrawn the hefty sum of cash from a bank located in Busia town, stashed it in a bag which he placed in the trunk of his Toyota Premio before starting a journey towards Kisumu.
He made a brief stop at Western Ambiance Hotel to calm hunger pangs, after which he continued with his journey.” DCI said.
Shortly after take-off, the man realised that the bag, which was in the rear seat of the car that contained his clothes and cash amounting to Ksh144,000, was missing. He stopped the car and went to check on the large sum of money in the car’s trunk but found it missing as well.
He opted to return to the hotel where he had made a stop-off and enquired for CCTV footage.
“The footage had captured occupants of an unestablished car make registration number KCM 948U use a key to gain ingress into the victim’s car, before walking back to their vehicle carrying two bags & driving off.
On receiving the report, detectives processed the scene & commenced a hunt for the criminals.
They however lost trail of the hoodlums after the registration plates earlier used on the suspicious vehicle were found dumped at a roadside.” DCI noted.
Detectives have now employed forensic means to pursue the gangsters, as they interrogate the victim to establish why he was carrying loadsamoney, which could have been banked for its safety.
