Google Invests $3.1Mn in Wikipedia

Google has boosted its investment in Wikipedia by donating $3.1 million to the free encyclopedia summing up its total donations to an excess of $7.5 million.

While making the announcement at the World Economic Forum, Google noted that part of the funding will be used to run the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation as well as sustain its long-term viability through the organisation endowment.

In addition, Google has permitted Wikipedia editors to freely use its machine learning tools even as the two companies seeks to venture into its joint initiative, Project Tiger.

Project Tiger will be relaunched to Growing Local Language Content (GLOW) in a bid to double the number of Wikipedia articles written in native languages in India and see the inclusion of 10 new languages in several countries.

In addition, Google will provide wikipedia with free access to its Custom Search API and Cloud Vision API in order to volunteer editors to easily cite the facts they use.
