Gor Mahia has been handed a walkover after their opponents Mt. Kenya United failed to show up at Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos for the Kenyan Premier League match that was scheduled for Thursday afternoon.
United was set to host the Kenyan Premier League leaders with the view of getting an unlikely win but in a shocking turn of events, the hosts failed to show up at Machakos.
Rather, the players camped at Nairobi City Stadium with reports indicating that they had failed to get transport to Machakos as the team's worsening financial situation reared its ugly face once again.
An interview with a number of players however revealed that there is a deeper problem that resulted to the them failing to honor the game.
"We have not been paid for over six months. How are we supposed to survive without pay?. We are tired of empty promises and today we decided not to travel," one of the players disclosed.
"The coach's salary is up to date. He gets paid at every end of the month yet we've not received a dime for months. There's a time we received KSh 100 each after a match, we have families to fend for, what can 100 bob do? Another stated.
It's the first time in Kenya's top flight that a team has dished out a walkover in recent years.
The club will face sanctions from KPL that includes a fine. Should they fail to honor two of their remaining ten matches, they will automatically be relegated to the National Super League.
