“I’ve cried, I’ve spent many sleepless nights, but as long as I’m alive, there is still some home.”
These are the words of Kenyan gospel artiste Lydiah Wairimu Muchiri, who has tried to conceive for more than 10 years.
When she finished her secondary education, it took only a few months before she met the man who became her husband for four years.
Her lover was a widower, who had two children. She becomes the mother of the two kids.
But after some time, the musician was concerned about why she was not getting pregnant.
“I got engaged when I was just a young lady. I had never used birth control pills or done anything that would prevent me from conceiving, but here I was. I wanted my own children,” she said during an interview on Metha ya Kagoni YouTube channel.
The 32-year-old started seeking medical attention from different gynaecologists, who told her that her fallopian tubes were blocked. She underwent to correct the condition.
“After an operation, I knew that I would get pregnant. However, that never happened,” she explained.
At this stage, pressure from in-laws was swelling and I was losing it.
“My two sisters-in-law were calling me names. I could tell my husband, who was away most of the time, and he could encourage me.”
However, the man gave up when she told him she did time away from the in-laws to heal.
“I think he misunderstood me and thought I want to dump him. We parted ways amicably and until today we still talk. His children still visit and call me mom.”
A few years later, she met a pastor and began dating. Everything went on well and even planned a wedding.
“Before we started the relationship, I made it clear to him that I was in another marriage and did not conceive. During payment of dowry, my father also told him that we may never have a child and he was very much okay,” she said.
She sensed trouble when the man of the cloth cut all communication with her barely three months to their wedding.
Lydiah tried all means to help him open up, but he was unwilling to open up.
“One month to our big day, he sent some elders to my parents and said he had canceled the wedding because I cannot conceive. I cried and asked God questions. What I went through made me stop going to church for four years,” she narrated.
The singer still hopes that one day God will open her womb as He did to Biblical Hannah.
She also has a message to women who insult, provoke, and irritate fellow women just because they don’t have children.
“Just know that you reap what you sow. Also, remember that you are raising children and you don’t know what they will become in the future,” she noted.
