Information Communication and technology Cabinet Secretary Joe Mucheru has announced plans by the Government to exempt tax on local productions currently capped at 5 percent.

Mucheru who was speaking during the launch of a report by Trends and Insights For Africa (TIFA) said the tax undermines local content as imported content appears to carry the day.

In the 2019 TIFA report crimes and sports featured heavily while politics was at a distant third owing to the march 2018 handshake.

The report by TIFA and Reelforge indicates internet searches revolved around football clubs and sports betting in 2018 and 2019.

And despite the perception that Kenyan media is obsessed with politics the report highlights crime as the most covered topic.

President Uhuru Kenyatta was the most mentioned personality in the news at 20 percent between October 2018 and June 2019 while his Deputy William Ruto was second at 13 per cent followed by opposition leader Raila Odinga at 8 per cent.

Mucheru called on stakeholders to restructure business models and invest heavily on audience preferences to boost economic growth.

The report comes against a backdrop of increase prevalence of fake news  with the CS  calling on media stakeholders to work on upholding credibility.
