National Women’s team intensifies training ahead of Kwibuka tournament

The national women’s cricket team head coach Francis Otieno has warned that the team faces a daunting task in their attempt to defend the Kwibuka Women’s T20 Cricket tournament scheduled from 9th-19th June in Kigali, Rwanda.

Kenya is among 8 nations that have confirmed participation in the 8th edition of the tournament held in remembrance of victims of the 1994 Rwanda genocide.

Head coach Francis Otieno admitted there’s pressure for the side to retain the Kwibuka title but stated that his long-term goal was to help the team qualify for the one-day status.

The coach who took charge of the team recently pointed out that for the country to regain its status the local women’s league needed revamping, getting the national team regular international games other changes.

A fairly changed Kenyan squad that consists of one debutant in Kelvia Ochieno will face hosts Rwanda, Uganda, Tanzania, Nigeria, Germany, Brazil and Botswana during the 9-day tournament.

Team Captain Queenter Abel believes the team is ready to single out batting which she said had proved challenging to the team in previous matches but had been worked on under the guidance of head coach Francis who also coached Uganda women’s national cricket team from 2016-2018.

Queenter who emerged as the tournament’s best player at last year’s edition will lead a squad of 14 players to the championship that Kenya will use to prepare for the forthcoming Women’s T20 cricket World Cup qualifiers which will be held in September in Uganda.

Two teams from the 8 participating nations will proceed to the next round of World Cup qualifiers where Malaysia, Bangladesh, Scotland and Sri Lanka await.

Four best-placed teams from the World 2oTwenty qualifiers will earn slots at the finals scheduled next year in South Africa.

Kenya, four-time winners of the tournament held annually since 2014 is expected to depart for Rwanda on 7th June.
