The government has embarked on a reform process in public universities in a bid to address financial constraints and other challenges facing the institutions.
Prof. Collette Suda, Chief Administrative Secretary and Principal Secretary for University Education and Research, said the reforms will involve rationalization of staff, and review of academic programmes among other changes.
Speaking on Friday during the 46th graduation ceremony at Kenyatta University Prof. Suda said the government is concerned about the potential impact of the financial difficulties facing Universities, and the impact it will have on the quality of teaching and research.
“The government’s intention for the reforms is noble, as it will be carried out in a participatory and consultative manner,” said Prof. Suda.

The PS noted the objective of the reform is to secure the stability and competitiveness of the universities, anchored on a sustainable growth model, and make graduates from the institutions competitive and able to secure opportunities within and beyond Kenya’s borders.
“We must do everything in our power to ensure our institutions of higher learning provide world class education” she stressed and encouraged all stakeholders to support the reforms.
She at the same time called upon Kenyatta University Management and other key stakeholders to take research findings to the next level of implementation for them to have impact on society.
Prof. Suda noted that the government is keen to revitalize research and innovation in the country’s universities and will do what is needed to ensure a supportive policy framework, as well as avail more funding through agencies such as the National Research Fund, and Kenya National Innovation Agency, among others
She commended Kenyatta University for planning a major international conference in October where issues related to the Big Four Agenda will be addressed.
“I congratulate Kenyatta University for this timely initiative and call upon other institutions to seize this opportunity to showcase their innovations, activities and plans towards the Big Four Agenda, and the Sustainable Development Goals,” said Prof. Suda.
The PS announced that the Ministry of Education will work with all stakeholders to mobilize ideas that will help develop an enviable curriculum that will form a firm foundation for children’s education.
“As the world changes, we have a responsibility to ensure Kenya’s education system is responsive and adequately prepares our children for the challenges of today and opportunities of tomorrow,” she added.
She said the country has chosen the Competency Based Curriculum as the best model and urged Kenyans to support it and make it work.
The PS urged the graduates to look out for opportunities that will enable them contribute towards the Big 4 Agenda and Vision 2030.
“Without doubt universities are expected to contribute much from their wealth of knowledge and expertise in diverse fields of specialization.
She also advised the graduates to be proactive and look for the many opportunities the government has put at their disposal such as the Ajira Digital platform, access to government procurement opportunities program and internship opportunities, among others.
