The Hague Institute for Innovation of Law (HiiL) has announced the call for applications for its Innovating Justice Challenge 2019.
HiiL is looking for up to 10 regional finalists from East Africa to take part in a week-long program preparing them to pitch to a jury made up of local and international specialists. Applications to the Innovating Justice Challenge close on the 15th of August 2019.
To be selected, an innovation needs to have the potential to become financially sustainable and scale nation-wide or globally, are already showing measurable impact and are led by a motivated, focused team driven to make a change.
This year, HiiL’s Justice Accelerator is looking for promising new justice innovations to prevent or resolve the most pressing justice needs around Crime and Law enforcement.
In 2017, we did a Justice’s Needs and Satisfaction Survey in conjunction with the Kenyan Judiciary which asked citizens to name their most pressing justice needs. From the survey, 89% of Kenyans indicated that Crime was their biggest justice need. Within the category of Crime, we are looking for innovations around preventing or resolving violent crimes such as murder or rape, non-violent crime such as theft or burglary, fraud or counterfeit and cattle rustling.
Innovators stand a chance to win up to 20,000 EUR in seed-funding, business development support, access to a global network, potential further investment opportunities and international exposure for their innovation, including the chance to pitch at the Innovating Justice Forum in The Hague in February 2020.
HiiL has supported more than 60 justice innovations worldwide since 2011. Some of those have become big, impacting the lives of hundreds of thousands of people. HiiL is supported by the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs to run the Justice Innovation programme in East Africa.
