Suna East MP Junet Mohamed has caused an uproar among Kenyans after a joke went south.

In his closing remarks during a forum in Nyamira County, the controversial lawmaker jested about Raila Odinga’s presidency.

Junet said that should the ODM leader Raila Odinga win the presidency next year, the government will belong to the people of the Nyanza region.

He noted that Central Kenya has produced two Presidents, hence they should not feel bad when the former Prime Minister ascends to power.

“If baba wins, the government will belong to us the people of Nyanza. I don’t want Health CS Mutahi Kagwe (who was at the function) to hear that, but Central Kenya has been in power long. This time around the government is coming to Nyanza, Mutahi you will come to this area as a visitor,” he said, throwing the crowd into fits of laughter.

The remark sparked a debate on social media, with critics of Raila warning Kenyans against electing him.

They argued that the former Premier’s supporters would despise other Kenyans if he becomes the Head of State.

Kelvin Koech wrote: “Junet is very close to Raila. He speaks baba’s mind and heart. That’s dangerous and reckless.”

Another netizen by the name of Mwangi Githaiga said: “Howe can we trust Raila Odinga? If Junet can talk that way yet they have not formed the government, what will happen if they take over? God forbid.”

However, Raila’s supporters, especially those from Mt Kenya, opined that their Tangatanga counterparts were overreacting over nothing.

They said if records of what politicians have said in the past were to be reviewed, then none of them deserves to be elected.

Dr. Ngugi Kimonjo: “What’s the fuss about what Junet said? The government will indeed belong to Raila, who is from Nyanza. This is a mere statement that cannot make us change our minds. We believe in baba.”
