Kabuu gets two-year ban for doping

Kenyan athlete Lucy Kabuu has been banned for two years after testing positive to banned performance enhancing substances. The Milano marathon champion has luckily avoided the maximum four years ban.

The ban is to take effect from August 1, 2018 – as indicated by the IAAF Integrity Unit – meaning she won’t be able to participate in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. Kabuu was suspended after her samples tested positive for narcotic morphine, during the Milano City Marathon on April 8, 2018.

Kabuu won the 10,000m gold and 5,000m bronze at the 2006 Commonwealth Games and has the 12th fastest time in women’s marathon history of 2:19.34 from 2012 Dubai.

The marathon star is among high profile Kenyan athletes who tested positive to banned substances last year including three times 1500m world champion Asbel Kiprop, African games 400m silver medalist Boniface Mweresa and 2017 World 800m bronze medalist Kipyegon Bett.

Bett has already been handed a four-year ban and will be eligible to compete again in August 2022 while Mweresa and Kiprop’s cases are still pending.
