Kayole Starlets Secretary General Raymond Onyango is calling for aid to avert the financial crunch in the Women Premier League (WPL) in the wake of missed matches that has seen them hand ‘walk overs’ to other teams.
Onyango’s sentiments come after Vihiga Queens benefited from a ‘walk over’ on Saturday after Kayole Starlets failed to honour their league match that had been scheduled for the Mumias Sports Complex.
Speaking to Citizen Digital, Onyango made it clear that their failure to honour their match against league leaders Vihiga Queens over the weekend was not out of their making but because of financial constraints that inhibited their travel out of the city.
“Teams are missing out on matches not because they want to but because of financial problems. Teams that do not have sponsorships like us can’t travel for our matches because of financial difficulties,” he stated.
Onyango affirmed that the situation affects the morale of the players in subsequent fixtures because they essentially play to avoid a series of walk overs that would see them relegated automatically.
“Missing the Saturday match really affected the girls’ morale because the fixture against Vihiga Leeds for example, was a win match for us but missing out on the second first match really killed their morale,” he decried.
Vihiga Queens would go on to beat Soccer Queens 6-1 on Sunday at the same venue whereas Kayole Starlets lost 3-2 to struggling Vihiga Leeds.
The club is now appealing to sponsors to come on board and help rescue the situation.
