Kenyan animated YouTube original series Super Sema has been nominated for a National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) image award.

The animated series is produced by Kukua – a Kenyan production company and is set in an Afro-futuristic community called Dunia; think Wakanda. The producers describe it as an exciting roller coaster of daring adventures, STEM inventions, and kid-power to save the village from a heartless AI Robot. The aim of the series is to empower and inspire the next generation to change the world through creativity, curiosity, and STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics).

Lupita stars as “Mama Dunia” and is also the executive producer of the show. Celebrating the news on Twitter, Nyong’o said, “…It’s been an honour to bring Sema to life in partnership with Kukua and this recognition is very special.” (SIC)

Super Sema is nominated alongside Big Mouth (Netflix),  Peanut Headz: Black History Toonz (Kweli TV), We The People (Netflix) and Yasuke (Netflix) in the category of Outstanding Animated Series. Voting is currently ongoing here.
