Kenyans angered as Senate clears governor

- Waiguru was impeached on Tuesday, June 9, after 23 out of 33 ward representatives supported the motion to remove the county chief

- The MCAs accused her of gross misconduct and abuse of office

- The matter was forwarded to the Senate which formed a 11-member committee to probe the corruption and abuse of office allegations levelled against her

- Cleophas Malala, the chair of the team, tabled the findings in the floor of the House on Friday, June 26, acquitting her of the claims stating it did not meet the threshold for her ouster

Angry Kenyans have trooped to social media in protest of Senate's decision to clear Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru of the impeachment charges leveled against her by the County Assembly.

The 11-member select committee chaired by Kakamega Senator Cleophas Malala said in its report findings that allegations faced by the first-term governor were not substantiated and thus failed to meet the threshold for removal.

The committee which conducted a two-day hearing into abuse off office allegations by Waiguru concluded the charge on conferring a personal benefit was proved but did not amount to an impeachable offence.

"From the evidence adduced, the committee established administrative malaise in the management of imprests in Kirinyaga county. The county assembly however, only prosecuted two of the alleged travels. The governor adduced evidence of the travel and where travel was not undertaken,"said Malala.

Soon after her survival was announced, angered netizens took to Twitter to voice their opinions under the #CorruptSenateKE.

"So Kenyans expected Malala committee to convict Waiguru of corruption case. Malala of all the people?. Kenya does not need a Senate,"Kigogo Ambrose wrote.

Nathan Sialah: "It's shameful and to see senators who were not even in the committee yapping and clapping for senator Malala when he's talking. We know you were ordered by your party leaders to support Waiguru but at least act professionally.

Tish Tish: "Senate pretending to be on the sides of Kenyans against corruption! That house must be disbanded."

Augustine Orina: "Cleophas Malala as the senators cheer you for doing zero work remember they're the same guys who will eat you. In another two years you will feel the same pinch. Thank you For betraying Kirinyaga residents."
