Kenya’s Covid-19 Cases Near 200,000 Mark as 1,006 More Test Positive

The Ministry of Health has announced 1,006 new Covid-19 cases from the 5,884 samples tested in the last 24 hours.

This brings to 199,941 the total number of confirmed cases from the 2,109,581 samples tested so far. The country’s positivity rate is at 18 per cent.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, 28th July, Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe announced that from the new cases, 966 are Kenyans while 40 are foreigners, with 485 being males and 521 females. The youngest is a three-week-old-infant while the oldest is 93.

Some 261 patients have recovered from the disease, 228 were discharged from various hospitals, and 33 from the home-based and isolation care, raising the total to 187,824.

The Covid-19 death toll rose to 3,895 after 13 more patients succumbed to the virus.

Currently, there are 1,386 admitted to various health facilities countrywide, while 3,686 patients are under the home-based isolation and care programme.

Some 174 patients are in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), 41 of whom are on ventilatory support, 82 on supplemental oxygen and 51 patients are under observation.

Another 433 patients are separately on supplemental oxygen with 387 of them in general wards and 46 in High Dependency Units (HDU).

Distribution of Cases in Counties:

Nairobi registered 391 cases, Kiambu 121, Kilifi 87, Kajiado 56, Mombasa 46, Nakuru 42, Uasin Gishu 37, Busia 26, Murang’a 24, Machakos 18, Kericho 14, Nyandarua 13, Taita-Taveta 11, Kirinyaga and Migori 10 cases each, and Bungoma and Nyeri, eight cases each. Lamu, Siaya and Turkana had seven cases each, Laikipia, Tana River, Nandi and Garissa six cases each, Kitui five, Baringo and Meru, four cases each, Bomet, Kisii, Embu, Kwale and Vihiga three cases each, Kakamega and Kisumu two cases each while Makueni, Narok, Trans Nzoia, West Pokot, Elgeyo-Marakwet, Homa Bay and Isiolo had one case each.

Vaccination: As of Wednesday, a total of 1,692,793 vaccines have so far been administered across the country. Of these, the total first doses are 1,052,343 while the second doses are 640,450.

The uptake of the second dose among those who received their first dose is at 60.9 per cent with the majority being males at 55 per cent while females are at 45 per cent. The Proportion of adults fully vaccinated is 2.35 per cent.

The uptake of the second dose by priority groups is as follows: Aged 58 and above 199,107, others 185,221, health workers 112,773, teachers 92,342 while security officers are at 51,007.
