Kisii Senator Sam Ongeri elected new CPAIC chair

Kisii Senator Prof Sam Ongeri has on Thursday been elected as new Chairperson of the County Public Accounts and Investments Committee (CPAIC).

Marsabit Senator Hargura Godana has been elected as the new vice chairperson.

The County Public Accounts and Investments Committee tasked with oversight of the expenditure of billions of shillings given to all 47 counties under the Division of Revenue and other conditional grants.

In May, Narok Senator Ledama Ole Kina was elected chair of the committee after defeating Kisii Senator Prof Sam Ongeri with five votes to four.

Ole Kina’s election resulted in the Orange Democratic Party (ODM) to eject him after accusing Ole Kina of defying the position to elect Kisii Senator Ongeri as the Chair.

In a bid to save himself, Ole Kina moved to court to halt to the process of ejecting him from the seat days after he was elected.

Through lawyer Nelson Havi, Ole Kina sought reprieve from the courts after Siaya Senator and Senate Minority Leader, James Orengo, wrote to the Speaker of the Senate, Kenneth Lusaka, seeking to have Ledama removed from the committee

In May, the High Court halted the removal of Narok Senator Ledama ole Kina from the powerful Senate Committee.
