But buoyed by their 2-0 win over giants Nigeria in the group stages, Madagascar defied all odds once again to seal a historic win to storm the competition's quarters.

Both sides enjoyed possession in the opening exchanges, but it was Madagascar who made best out of their chances as Ibrahim Amada scored the opener within just nine minutes of game play with a rocket strike.

However, Chancel Mbemba equalised at the death to force the match into extra time, with the two teams sharing spoils at the end of regulation time.

With the extra time producing no goal, the round of 16 clash had to be decided through the penalty shootouts that Madagascar won.

The Nicolas Dupuis-tutored side managed to convert all of their four spot-kicks, with Yannick Bolasie missing the all-important spot-kick for the Leopards.

Madagascar will now face the match winner between Algeria and Guinea in the last eight of the competition.

This will be their first appearance in the AFCON quarter-finals in their first appearance at the tournament.
