Michael Joseph has been appointed as interim CEO at Safaricom following the passing on of the Company’s Chief Executive Officer (CEO), Mr. Robert (Bob) William Collymore on 1 July 2019.
Mr Joseph was selected by the board at a Special Board meeting of the Directors’ that was held to ensure there is no power vacuum at Safaricom. Mr. Michael Joseph, a Board member of the Company will hold this position until the Board communicates in due course, on a permanent appointment.
Mr. Joseph is a former CEO of the Company and the current Chairman of the Board of Kenya Airways. Mr. Joseph will provide the necessary guidance and leadership to the Company and its employees.
Bob Collymore died at his home in the morning of 1st July 2019 after battling Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML) which saw him get admitted in a UK hospital in October 2017 for treatment.
Bob returned in July 2018 to Safaricom and continued to undergo treatment for this condition in different hospitals and most recently at Aga Khan University Hospital in Nairobi.
According to the board, in recent weeks, his condition worsened leading to his death. The board has also been thinking of his replacement for years now and especially because of his sickness.
Mr Collymore was appointed CEO at Safaricom in 2010, had his contract extended for two years in 2017 to August 2019. However, because of his sick leave, the board had extended his contract by a year to compensate for the time he was away on medication, thus being scheduled to leave the telco in 2020.
