NTSA boss Francis Meja warned that the rising number of deaths had a negative impact on the country's economy.

"This is a challenge that we must now confront as it is evidently big impediment to our sustainable development goals, costing our country 5% of our GDP," he noted.

Mr Meja blamed wrong attitudes toward road safety laws as the main hindrance to curbing disasters on the roads.

He also launched a six-day campaign on road safety awareness dubbed the UN Global Safety Week.

He explained that the event advocates for zero deaths along the roads.
