Plans are underway to relieve Kenyans of high water bills following recommendations by the parliamentary Energy Committee to reduce the cost of electricity tariffs for water companies.
The committee led by Vice-Chairman Dr. Robert Pukose said the move would also end constant power disconnections due to non-payment.
Pukose spoke after touring Baricho waterworks in Kilifi County following a petition by Kilifi North MP Owen Baya who is seeking the reduction of tariffs for water companies.
The Energy Committee vice chairman said they have banned renewal of contracts for thermal power generating companies.

He blamed the long term contracts which cannot be altered saying they inhibit regulation.
Pukose asked Kenya Power to convene a meeting with all water companies within a month to ensure they reach an agreement that should see power tariffs come down.
Meanwhile, Renowned for being pastoralists, a majority of Kajiado residents are turning to crop farming to earn a living.

Most Kajiado County residents practice pastoralism and crop farming could be the least of the community’s economic activities. However, in the recent past, owing to climate change, some pastoralists are embracing crop farming.
Walter Shakita, is one such farmer who converted after disposing his cattle for 2 million shillings, cash that partly financed sinking of a borehole to support irrigation.
According to Shakita, farm inputs remain a big challenge in the agricultural value chain in Kajiado thus he is urging the government to subsidize farm inputs.
He is also calling on pastoralists to embrace modern farming terming it a viable venture.
