Several members of parliament are calling for the withdrawal of the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (amendment) bill number 35 of 2019 to give room for more consultation.
They are opposed to the composition of a selection panel to oversee filling of vacancies in the electoral body as proposed in the bill.
They argue that the rationale on who should sit in the selection panel does not make sense. They are specifically irked by the side-lining of political parties.
The bill, which is in the second reading in the National Assembly, proposes that the Parliamentary Service Commission nominate four people to join the selection.

According to the bill, other nominees should come from the public service commission, Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission, Law Society of Kenya, National Gender and Equality Commission, Attorney General’s office, the Kenya National Commission on Human Rights and the inter-religious Council of Kenya.
The eleven-member selection panel’s main mandate will be to shortlist suitable persons for appointment as commissioners by the president.
