Publishing images or videos of Kenyan currency on social media or anywhere else without permission from Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) can land one in jail or leave you with a hefty fine to pay, the regulator has revealed.

The warning came after a Nairobi pastor shared on social media photos of a poster showing the recently unveiled Kenyan banknotes as he advertised a special church service dedicated to celebrating the new currency.

Attention of the CBK was seemingly drawn to the peculiar church service that was being advertised and promptly issued a statement explaining those who would wish to use images of Kenyan currency for any purpose must seek approval from the regulator.

"Did you know? If you would like to use images of Kenyan currency for any purpose, you MUST apply in writing to the Central Bank of Kenya for approval.
CBK will consider your application and either allow it or reject it. There are penalties for contravening this," the regulator noted in a tweet posted on July 5, 2019.

Indeed, Section 57 of the Central Bank of Kenya Act states that any person who wishes to use cash in any publication and for any purpose shall apply in writing to the Bank for approval.
