Narc Kenya MCA aspirant for Muthara Ward in Meru County who was arrested Thursday for alleged Mpesa fraud will spend three more days in police custody.
Benson Thuranira Kathiai is alleged to have obtained over Ksh350,000 fraudulently from Mpesa agents and is set to answer to fraud charges at the Nakuru Law Courts on May 30th.
A report from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) indicates that Muthara had obtained Ksh 100,000 from two Mpesa agents before he obtained a further Ksh135,000 in Shauri Moyo, and Ksh60,000 in Busia.
In Meru, he allegedly conned a businesswoman of Ksh120,000 and defrauded other people in Mwea and Mombasa.
Thuranira who is a graduate of Mount Kenya University with bachelor’s degree in business administration is believed to be a member of the outlawed criminal gang called ‘Confirm’ that is involved in mobile money fraud.
He is also suspected to have used the money to fund his campaign.
Detectives based in Nakuru are appealing to other Mpesa agents who may have been defrauded by Thuranira and the rest of the gang to come forward and file their reports.
