Police have today recovered an illegal firearm and ammunitions following an operation at a village in the outskirts of Marsabit town.
Marsabit County police commander Robinson Mboloi said three suspects were also arrested for being in possession of the illicit firearm during the swoop at Manyatta Adhi Huka in Saku constituency.
Mboloi said the security personnel managed to recover an AK-47 and 33 bullets and an assortment of other security gear bringing to three the number of illicit firearms that the police have retrieved from wrong hands in the recent past.
The county commander said the operation that was carried out following intelligence reports that there could be armed criminals harbouring in the village also succeeded in the recovery of a binocular, a jungle belt, 2 jungle jackets, 2 jungle trousers and three angola-shirts.
He said the combat outfits are believed to belong to the government adding that investigations were underway regarding the matter.
The county Commander while assuring members of the public of the government commitment to provide them with security and that of their property said investigations have been intensified to enable the police to arrest other suspects believed to be possessing illegal firearms.
“The illegal firearm was recovered in one of the three men suspects arrested during the stern operation carried out by our officers at the Manyatta” he said
The arrest comes in the wake of government heightened resolve to stem insecurity in the area following cases of violent attacks on innocent residents by suspected armed criminals.
Responding to allegations that the action by the police followed demands by a local politician, Mr Mboloi warned against anybody taking lightly the capability of the security agencies to conduct an operation against illegal possession of illicit firearms and dangerous criminals.
The suspects are expected to be arraigned in court to answer charges against them.
