Raila Jeered by Youths After Blunder, SK Macharia Saves Him

ODM leader Raila Odinga on Saturday, September 16, found himself in a tight spot during the Isiolo County chapter of his Azimio la Umoja (quest for unity) campaigns.

The former Prime Minister had a successful engagement with local youths until he invited one of his friends from Nigeria to speak.

Raila wanted the Nigerian senator, Obi Ogbike, to address his supporters, but they protested. They were particularly unhappy because the foreign lawmaker was passing his message in English and again he did not understand the needs of the locals.

He tried to calm down the rowdy youths, but they could hear none of it.

Local leaders, who had accompanied the opposition chief, also unsuccessfully attempted to bring calmness.

In his plea, Raila noted that he had friends across the world and Kenyans should listen to them without heckling.

“I appeal to you that for the respect you have for me, don’t dismiss anyone without listening to them,” the AU Special Envoy said.

But what are friends for?

It took the intervention of media mogul SK Macharia to save the day.
Macharia promised to establish a Borana radio station in less than a month.

“There is a friend of mine here called SK Macharia of Royal Media Services (RMS) and he has told me that this area does not have a local radio channel.

“Right now, he has promised that you will have one in the next three weeks and he will hire your children to be broadcasting in the station,” Raila said.

Immediately after the statement, the mood changed.
The agitated youths calmed down and started chanting pro-Raila slogans.

Macharia, a close confidant of Raila, has invested heavily in the media, having established at least 14 radio stations and three TV channels.
