There was an awkward moment yesterday when President Uhuru Kenyatta hosted several political parties leaders at State House in Mombasa.
The meeting was attended by ODM leader Raila Odinga, Wiper’s Kalonzo Musyoka, Gideon Moi of Kanu, ANC boss Musalia Mudavadi and Ford-Kenya’s Moses Wetangula. Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya, who also doubles as ODM deputy party leader was also present.
After hours of closed-door talks, the President led the senior politicians for a small photoshoot at the doorsteps of his office.
However, there was something that happened and drew the attention of keen observers.
As they bid each other goodbyes, Raila was seen brushing off Kalonzo.
The former stretched his arm towards Moi and Wetangula for final greetings but dismissed Kalonzo who was near the two leaders.
Many commenters deduced that the body language between the two former co-principals of the National Super Alliance (Nasa) just painted how stormy the meeting was.
A statement by State House spokesperson Kanze Dena highlighted that the get-together was dominated by brainwork on how to fetch back the economy from Covid-19 shocks.
“Among the subjects discussed by the leaders were, Covid-19’s impact on the country and how to revamp the economy; and the importance of maintaining peace, unity and national cohesion,” she said.
However, sources intimated that politics took prominence at the session.
The President is said to have beseeched the leaders to work together if they were to deliver the presidency next year.
He warned that Deputy President William had an upper hand in the race should there be a branch off.
Unhappy
However, Mudavadi and Kalonzo reportedly did not seem to agree with the Head of State, who mooted the idea of a super coalition.
The two dissenting leaders said they would only enter into such an arrangement if only Raila commits to support one of them.
Kalonzo noted that his supporters would be frustrated if he backs Raila for the third time.
There is also something else that Kenyans picked up on after the leaders adjourned.
While Raila, Moi, and Oparanya took to their social media platforms to confirm they attended the meeting, Kalonzo, Mudavadi, and Wetangula did not post anything.
