Reign of terror at Butere Girls school – Weekly Citizen

A Form Three student in Kakamega county recently committed suicide after getting wind that she would be suspended from school. And now parents blame teachers for having threatened the girl with suspension.
They say, if the teachers had not threatened her, she would not have committed suicide. Students at the school claim that of late, the teachers mistreat them and that they are not friendly.
Elizabeth Musoi Muunya, a student at Butere Girl’s Secondary School which is a national boarding school in Butere constituency committed suicide by hanging herself on the bed using neck tie while other sources say she was beaten and tied on the bed but security sources say truth will be known after investigations are carried out.
According to her class mates, the girl did not show any signs of stress as she just disappeared during night preps and later her dead body discovered in the dormitory by other students after evening lessons.
Confirming the incident, Butere OCPD Benson Lusiolo said the body was removed from the scene and taken to St Mary’s Mortuary in Mumias.
The school principal Jennifer Omondi and subcounty education officer Martin Likoko declined to speak to the press concerning the incident.
Parents are also bitter with the principal who boasts to be close to deputy president William Ruto’s wife Rachael, a former student of the school, that she cannot be transferred. She is rarely at school out looking for development funds from Rachael with claims that part of the money is being embezzled.
For now, word has it that a group of teachers commonly referred to as the Giant Five are the ones running the institution as the principal cuts deals. The five teachers are said to threaten students with suspension.
