Section of City Roads to Closed on Sunday During Standard Chartered Marathon

The National Police Service (NPS) has announced that a section of roads in Nairobi shall remain closed on the 31st of October 2021 to pave way for the 2021 Standard Chartered Marathon.

In a statement issued on Thursday, 28th October, Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai said that the event shall affect transport within the city and environs, inconveniencing motorists and other road users.

The roads that will be affected by the marathon include; Southern bypass from Carnivore to Dagoreti Corner interchange, which shall remain closed from 1.00 am – 2.00 pm (estimated end of the marathon).

Road users are also advised to avoid using Mombasa road turnoff to Southern bypass at Ole Sereni Hotel and also Mombasa road turnoff at ICD which shall remain closed.

“The public is further advised to use main Mombasa Road or alternative routes than those to be closed to avoid inconvenience. The public’s cooperation during the event shall be appreciated,” said Mutyambai.

The Standard Chartered Nairobi Marathon is expected to attract local and international athletes.

Since its first edition in 2003, the marathon has grown tremendously and has earned recognition from World Athletics and the Association of International Marathons and Distance Races (AMS).

Having attracted over 250,000 participants across its 17 editions, it is currently the largest single-day sporting event in Kenya.

Last year’s event attracted over 19,000 participants from all walks of life.
