Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko has decried the government’s failure to comprehensively fund the devolved units of government, citing the worsening state of health services in Nairobi county government due to underfunding.

In his Labour Day speech, Sonko said as the council of governors, they are requesting for more funding from treasury saying the current 15% transferred to counties is not enough.

He further said Nairobi County government finds itself in a unique situation as it has inherited debts worth Ksh. 60 billion and huge wage bills from defunct locals authorities and urged for more financial provision.

At the same time, Sonko reiterated his waiver of over Ksh. 172 million rent arrears owed by tenants living in county-owned houses. He, however, cautioned tenants to pay rent on time going forward.

Sonko said the waiver has been issued to end cases of tenants being evicted from county government houses by cartels who later allocate the houses to new tenants at a fee.
