The push for the bill the seeking to relieve treated patients and bodies at hospital from detention continues to gain momentum, and today the MPS held a consultative meeting with Africa Center For Reproductive Health which is also pushing for the same.
Addressing journalists the bill’s sponsor Nyando MP Jared Okello says the hospitals have been practicing an illegality by detaining bodies and patients with debts and that parliament will not allow the same to continue.
‘‘We do not want hospitals and mortuaries to be turned into cells and prisons they are not correctional facilities, we want health facilities to follow the law just like banks and other institutions that deal with defaulters.’’ Okello noted.
Africa Center For Reproductive Rights regional director Evelyne Opondo says the women is the most affected with more detained after maternal treatment.
‘‘Most of the detentions have been born by women due to their reproductive capabilities and the courts have also pronounced themselves saying patients being detained in health facilities is a violation of fundamental rights.’’
The meeting was attended by over 10 member of parliaments whop also shared their past on the same matter.
