In a series of tweets on the morning of Saturday, June 27, Starehe Member of Parliament (MP) Charles Jaguar confirmed officers from the General Service Unit (GSU) were also present.
According to the vocal legislature and musician, the GSU officers were offering protection and backup to the NYS recruits who were carrying out the exercise.
“NYS recruits are in Gikomba right now. They are demolishing stalls that traders had reconstructed after a mysterious fire razed them on Thursday morning.,” tweeted Jaguar.
“GSU officers are also there protecting the recruits. Is this exercise a sign that the govt was involved in the recent fire?” he posed.
Condemning the demolitions, Jaguar called for an immediate halt to the exercise while asking the NYS recruits to vacate the market immediately
He instead asked security officers present at the Gikomba market to guard the reconstructed stalls and other properties owned by the traders.
“The government exists to protect property. It should not oversee its destruction,” said Jaguar.
When Interior Principal Secretary Karanja Kibicho accompanied by NMS Director-General Badi visited the market after the fire broke out, they promised each trader KSh 10,000 compensation.
According to the Starehe MP, the exercise was of bad intention as the government which should protect its people was destroying their stalls something he termed as suspicious and insensitive.
During his tour of the market, Kibicho said there were private individuals seeking to grab the public land for private use and that the government believed the fires were not natural,
He further added that a desk has been set up at the fifth floor of Nyayo House to probe all information and leads that could unmask the cartels that were causing untold pain to the traders.
“We hear that some people had made social media posts predicting that this fire would occur. We have opened a desk at Nyayo House, 5th floor,” said Kibicho

The PS further stated that the government was planning on relocating the traders to other markets set to be built within Nairobi.
“Unfortunately there are people who believe that when the business people using this space are evacuated that they will have an opportunity to use this land for private use,” he said.
“Gikomba is public land and it shall be used for public purposes even after we relocate the traders who are to here to the markets we are building,” said the PS.
