Drama ensued in Kilifi town after supporters of two ODM gubernatorial aspirants almost engaged in a fistfight during a delegates meeting.
Supporters of immediate former Devolution CAS Gideon Mung’aro and Kilifi county assembly speaker Jimmy Kahindi both who are eying the gubernatorial seat clashed in public in what appeared to be a supremacy contest.
The meeting funded by Kahindi hosted over 1,000 delegates and aspirants including Kilifi deputy governor, Gideon Saburi, who also declared interest in the top county seat together with some top officials from ODM headquarters in Nairobi.
During the scuffle, police intervened and restored calm while elected legislators were present and the gubernatorial aspirants rushed to the dais and began dancing to a song to get the attention of the groups.
Kilifi ODM Chairman Teddy who was chairing the meeting announced that by next week there would be five gubernatorial aspirants in the ODM party in the county and announced that Kenyan Envoy to Tanzania Dan Kazungu had even sent a representative.
Further, he said former Assistant Minister Francis Baya had also hinted that he could be joining the gubernatorial race on an ODM ticket.
He thanked Kahindi for funding the delegates’ meeting and assured all aspirants that nominations would be free and fair.
He said the meeting had been organized with the purpose of revamping the party and injecting fresh energy.
