Strathmore Leos and Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST RFC) maintained their 100% start to the 2019-20 KRU Championship campaign after beating South Coast Pirates and University of Eldoret Trojans respectively over the weekend.
Leos saw off Pirates 57-0 in Nairobi while MMUST beat Trojans 22-3 in Kakamega as the two teams registered their fifth consecutive wins to remain the only unbeaten sides in the league.
The former Kenya Cup side lead the standings with 24 points, three more than second-placed MMUST and captain Gabriel Adero has made clear their intentions of returning to Kenya Cup known by promising to continue with their fine form.
“We started the campaign on a high and we are working towards keeping it that way. We are, however, going to be cautious since every team is strong in the championship,” he said.
Mean Machine moved to third in the standings with 16 points from their third win in the championship after thrashing Mombasa 40-9 at the University of Nairobi Grounds.
Northern Suburbs Cubs got one over their brothers Catholic Monks beating them 25-13 to leapfrog United States International University-Africa (USIU) RFC into fourth with 13 points as the latter dropped to fifth after being held in a 14-14 draw by Egerton Wasps.
USIU captain Eliud Mulakoli said they will be back.
“We are slowly picking the pace and I can promise we will get up the table with time. It’s still early to predict and we are ready for the challenge,” he said.
In the North Rift, Eldoret RFC bounced back to winning ways after beating former Kenya Cup side Kisii RFC 26-5 to pick their second win of the season and move from the relegation zone.
