Trouble is brewing at Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organisation as its director general Eliud Kireger is at loggerheads with a section of members of his senior staff.
Kireger’s leadership has seen a mass exodus of scientists from the organisation.
Due to the mass exodus, a number of it, research projects that were being undertaken by those who have left hang in balance.
Sometimes back, staff went for months without getting salaries. Funding of various projects has been a headache and mismanagement of donor money.
Kireger is also accused of forcing the procurement department to award tenders to firms he has interest in.
Most of the staff members have lost confidence in Kireger and prefer dealing with his deputy Joseph Mureithi in charge of livestock. Mureithi is seen as sober-minded unlike Kireger who loves his beer and nyama choma.
