President Uhuru Kenyatta on Thursday, 5th August, nominated four candidates to fill vacant positions in the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC).
They are Juliana Wihonge Chirera, Francis Mathenge Wanderi, Irene Cherop Masit, and Justice Abonyo Nyangaya.
They were among 36 other Kenyans that were interviewed by a seven-member IEBC Selection Panel chaired by Dr Elizabeth Muli.
President Kenyatta has forwarded the names of the nominees to the National Assembly for vetting.
The Justice and Legal Affairs Committee will vet the four and table a report within 28 days as directed by House Speaker Justin Muturi.
“I hereby refer the message, together with the curriculum vitae of the four nominees to the Departmental Committee on Justice and Legal Affairs to undertake the necessary approval hearings,” said Muturi.
“The committee should expeditiously notify the nominees and the general public the time and place for holding the approval hearings and upon conclusion of the hearings table its report in the House in good time to enable it to consider the matter within the stipulated timelines preferably before the long recess, which is in accordance with the current schedule for 20th August 2021.”
If approved they will replace Roselyn Akombe, Margaret Mwachanya, Paul Kurgat, and former vice-chair Consolata Maina, who resigned from the commission in 2017 and 2018.
