President Uhuru Kenyatta appears to have endorsed his deputy, William Ruto’s, economic model to tackle the country’s socio-economic problems. Ironically, his sentiments have emerged at a time when Deputy President Ruto and his allies have been mocked by a section of Kenyans for struggling to explain the ‘bottom-up’ economic model.

Kandara MP Alice Wahome, her Kikuyu counterpart, Kimani Ichungwa, and Kiambu Woman Representative Gathoni Wamuchomba were criticised for flip-flopping in their explanations.

The critics, a majority of whom support President Kenyatta, dismissed the economic model as mere sloganeering.

However, DP Ruto’s camp has unleashed a recent video in which President Kenyatta explained the ‘bottom-up’ model.

In one of his addresses on the Covid-19 pandemic, the Head of State acknowledged that the economy should be resuscitated from the bottom up and not the other way round.

“During these unprecedented times of the coronavirus, we must cushion our economy from below up and not from top-down,” he said.

The President added that his administration had put in strategies to support the ‘bottom-up’ model.

“Some of the choices we have made I strongly believe catalyse and help us to build the economy from bottom up,” he said.

However, the President’s views were made before the Tangatanga group that supports DP Ruto started popularising the ‘bottom-up’ slogan.

The video clip has sparked a huge debate on social media platforms, as netizens react to the President’s views.
