The giant Dock Workers Union (DWU) has terminated the nomination of five officials to its National Executive Committee pending ratification by the union board and later by the Annual General Meeting (AGM). Speaking at the Port of Mombasa yesterday, DWU national chairman, Mr Mohamed Sheria said that they have owned up to blunder by the board in naming the five and moved to make the amends. Two of the slots had been reserved for persons with disabilities but were filled by those who are not disabled. ''It is never too late to rescind a decision. We have already communicated to the five and even given them ample time to make their submissions and or objections to the actions taken,'' Sheria who was flanked by the Unions treasurer, Mr Joseph Makero said. He gave the names of the five who have sat in the committee as Mr Julius Nyandoro, Gladys Chepkorir, Musa Huka, David Mwanza and Tito Mwanyalo respectively. ''They have 14 days on which to appeal against the decision to revoke their nominations. They will then appear before purposely convened AGM as we move to officially expunge them from the committee,'' he said. At the same time, Sheria has cautioned employees of Kenya Ports Authority (KPA) against participating in the planned illegal procession and demonstrations to held today (Sunday) in Mombasa. ''This move has never been sanctioned by DWU and is a one-man initiative. It is the General Secretary, Mr Simion Sang who is working alone to further his own agendas that are not beneficial to the DWU fraternity,'' Sheria said. Information circulating in Mombasa indicate that DWU will be holding demonstrations to oppose alleged plans to privatise part of the Mombasa Port. '' We have not been informed by our employer of pending job losses. Where did Sang get all this information from. We know whose agenda he is trying to advance. We are urging our workers to shun the demonstrations and stay off the streets instead,'' Sheria said. Sheria also used the occasion to commend President Uhuru Kenyatta's administration for allowing Blue Economy sector to thrive. '' We are happy that already 40 youths are being drafted to work aboard Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) cruise liners in an exercise that ended this week. We wish to assure the government of our support to all ventures that are geared towards giving jobs to the jobless youths,'' he said.
