Van Dijk beats Sterling, Hazard to win PFA Players’ Player of the Year award

- The result will officially be announced on Thursday, April 25

- Six players including Raheem Sterling, Sadio Mane, Eden Hazard, Sergio Aguero and Bernardo Silva were listed for the prestigious award

Liverpool's Virgil Van Dijk has reportedly won the PFA Players' Player of the Year award after seeing off Raheem Sterling and four other players.

According to the Mirror report, the Dutchman will be officially be crowned winner on Thursday, April 25.

The big centre-half has played an important role so far in Liverpool’s quest for both the Premier League and Champions League this campaign.

Van Dijk has also helped the Reds defence line become stronger since his arrival at Anfield last year.

The £75m-rated defender was among six players that included Sterling, Sadio Mane, Eden Hazard, Sergio Aguero and Bernardo Silva, nominated for the. PFA Players' Player of the Year award.

Interestingly, the Dutch star has exhibited top class defending as a centre-back, even as he had played with the Joe Gomes and Joel Matip in the heart of Liverpool defence.

The Reds have only lost one Premier League fixture this term with Virgil Van Dijk in action, and have let in 20 goals which is the least number in the English topflight.

Van Dijk would now become the first defender to win the award since John Terry in 2005.

Earlier in the week, the Liverpool defence ace disclosed that he had voted for City’s Sterling for the PFA award.

However, on the other hand, Sterling opted to vote for England forward Harry Kane.
