2019 – Central Organisation of Trade Unions (COTU) Secretary
General, Francis Atwoli, has slammed Deputy President William Ruto’s Western
Kenya political allies for confusing him for the Head of State.

Speaking yesterday, Atwoli hit out at a
section of Luhya leaders fond of attending meetings at Ruto’s Sugoi home and
other residences saying they were misled to seek governance guidance from the DP’s
home instead of seeking President Uhuru Kenyatta’s counsel at State House.
He referred to the Luhya MPs trooping to
Ruto’s home for handouts as “washenzi” (idiots), saying their
behaviour amounted to undermining Uhuru’s powers.
“It is impossible for the Deputy President
to dish out development projects.”
“The sword of power is always in the
hand of one person and no matter how weak that person is, one day they will
rise to the occasion and everything will change,” he said.
Atwoli thanked Uhuru for appointing Interior
Cabinet Secretary, Fred Matiangi, to spearhead implementation of all Government
development projects saying the move will now stop Luhya leaders from
going to beg Ruto at his home.
“The President has now risen to the
occasion. “
He has begun showing he is President who
is supposed to protect his citizens.”
“If the President would continue looking
weak and delegating his powers to his deputy then the voters’ loyalty would
shift to him,” said the COTU leader.
