Plans are underway to set up women’s leagues in western Kenya with teams from Kakamega, Vihiga, Busia and Bungoma set to compete from sub-branch to division two level in one month’s time.
Following a meeting held at Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega on Monday, chaired by Football Kenya Federation western region national executive representative Tony Kweya, it was resolved that each sub-branch gets at least three teams for the division two league and the same formula will be applied when the branch and sub-branch leagues are started.
“When we took over the mandate to run soccer in the country under the leadership of Nick Mwendwa, we promised to take football to every corner of the country and it will be a big mistake if we leave behind women,” said Kweya.
Branches lauded
He added: “We have identified the right personnel through the various coaching and refereeing courses that we have been undertaking in the country.
This will help us put the right structures in place to help us run the leagues smoothly.”“Women’s football is growing fast and we do not want to be left behind. We therefore want to urge various clubs in the region to consider having women’s teams,” said Kweya.
He also lauded efforts being done by the two western region branches, saying the top three teams from each zone will directly be promoted to the division two league next season while assuring that the federation will ensure all the teams are treated fairly. FKF western branch chairman Moses Akali and secretary general Kelvin Mwangu also attended the meeting.
