Mwamba RFC head coach Kevin Wambua is aiming to win the Kabeberi Sevens title this weekend in Meru County after finishing third in the opener of the National Sevens Circuit held in Kakamega over the weekend.
Hosting the second leg in Meru, Wambua who is also the Shujaa’s assistant coach expects tough competition.
“Last year we hosted Kabeberi Sevens in Machakos and lost in the quarter finals so finishing third in the opener of the Circuit gives us the morale to go back to the drawing board and rectify mistakes that we made,” he observed. “We want to reach in the finals in all the remaining five legs.”
It will be the first time that the circuit will be heading to Meru County.
“Taking rugby in Meru is all about developing the sport there and trying to take it across the country, and having a good fan base. We thought it was good to take it out of Nairobi to break the monotony,”he noted.
In Kakamega, Mwamba outclassed Nakuru based side Top Fry Nakuru 17-0 to finish third.
“Kakamega Sevens was quite competitive and that shows that rugby is in the right path in the country, having quality teams, quality games and players, and this being the opener of the circuit we expect an explosive series.”
Wambua also applauded the new talents in the tourney saying that the involvement of the youth players shows how rugby is developing.
“We started this journey of developing players two years ago and now it’s just a blend of experienced players and the youth who have come up in the ranks, so we’re just trying to get the right combination and rhythm going forward, but at the moment we’re happy with the third place finish.”
Mwamba finished runners up in the circuit last year, behind defending champions, Menengai Cream Homeboyz.
