Kenya women’s cricket team will leave for Harare Friday to compete in International Cricket Council Africa Twenty20 International tournament.
The tournament will run from May 5-12 at three venue; Harare Sports Club, Old Hararians and Tangashinga Cricket Club in the Zimbabwean capital city.
Nine teams - Kenya, Mozambique, Namibia, Nigeria, Rwanda, Sierra Leone, Tanzania, Uganda and hosts Zimbabwe - will vie for the sole slot reserved for Africa in the 2019 ICC Women’s World Twenty qualifiers in Scotland from August 31 to September 7.
The top two teams from the 2019 ICC Women’s World Twenty qualifiers will play in 2020 ICC Women’s Twenty20 World Cup in Australia from February 21 to March 8.
The Kenyan team will miss the services of experienced all-rounder Sarah Bhatika who sprained her right leg ankle during training at Ruaraka Sports Club on Wednesday.
Bhatika’s place in the squad will be taken by Nakuru-based Ruth Achando, a middle-order right hand batsman, who is also a wicket keeper.
Kenya’s women’s team has not won a major tournament. The team faces stern from Uganda and Zimbabwe at the tournament. Uganda has the best development programme in East Africa and has sent a youthful side to Zimbabwe.
