Xiaomi Mi Max Series officially discontinued

I love big phones. And I love Xiaomi phones. And I am sad that big Xiaomi devices are now officially gone.

We’d known since June that there wouldn’t be a Mi Max device launching soon, but it hadn’t been official that the series was dead. Given Redmi brand’s General Manager recent words on Weibo, it seems now official: The Mix Max 3 is the last in that series.

The Mi Max series consisted of huge devices, up to 6.9 inches diagonally. I always wanted one. I remember being extremely frustrated last year when trying to buy the Mi Max 3, and not finding it available locally.

For me, a big phone is great because of a couple of things:

  • Huge but pocketable – You can’t pocket a tablet. You can’t make phone calls with a tablet. Here’s a phablet that’s just perfect.
  • Huge display – perfect for reading, perfect for movies, perfect for travel, perfect for creating stuff.
  • Huge battery – The Mi Max 3 launched with a 5500mAh battery. Beat that.

Xiaomi recently launched the Mi NOTE 10 despite also saying back in June that there wouldn’t be a Mi NOTE coming up. Which gives me hope that perhaps the company is just buying time, and we may see a Mi MAX 4 soon. I want this to happen. I want a 7 inch phone from Xiaomi with a huge 6000mAh battery, and 30W+ fast charging.

In my recently Spark 4 Review, I said it is incredible that almost all phones launched this year are these huge 6.2, 6.5 inch devices. And people have gotten used to that. Perhaps, Xiaomi believes there’s now no need for bigger phones. But I wouldn’t agree with them. Give me something a little bigger than my Galaxy NOTE 10+ with more battery, a normal midrange processor, and a Full HD AMOLED display, and I would buy it.
