Egyptian side Zamalek SC edged Kenyan champions Tusker FC 1-0 in the opening leg of their Caf Champions League second preliminary round at the Nyayo National Stadium.

Achraf Bencharki’s strike in the 47th minute was enough to seal the victory for the visitors.

Speaking after the match Brewers head coach Robert Matano blamed his players for lack of courage.

“We could not even string two passes in the first half. We have experienced players who I feel could control the game but unfortunately we feared the opponents. It is like inferiorty complex – we did not have the courage to challenge Zamalek and that was our major undoing,” Matano told Mozzart Bet.

“We will now regroup and prepare for the second leg. Zamalek should not think they will have an easy time in the return match. We will fight until the end.”

Meanwhile, Zamalek coach Patrice Carteron praised Tusker FC despite their home defeat.

“They proved why they are Kenyan champions. They are very organised team especially defensively and they gave us some hard time. We did not prepare very well for this game but we will do better ahead of the return tie for sure,” said Carteron.

The result leaves the Kenyan champions with a mountain to climb in the return leg which will be played in Alexandria, Egypt on Friday, 22nd October.
