20-year-old calls President Uhuru, pleads for more jobs

A 20-year-old lady on Friday, got the rare chance of making a phone call to President Uhuru Kenyatta. The lady identified as Ann Wanjiru is one of the beneficiaries of a national government initiative dubbed Kazi Mtaani. She made the call from Elburgon in Nakuru County.

In the phone call, Ms. Waniru thanked the president for the initiative, saying that it had rescued thousands of youths from joblessness.

She however requested that the president to extend the initiative’s duration from the set eleven days.

“We would request if you can extend this program for more days,” she pleaded.

The president responded saying that the extension would not be possible for now.

“We created this program so that you can work and get paid, and after 11 days, the opportunity can be given to other youths. The intention is to ensure that the money set aside for this program reaches all the youths who have enrolled,” said President Uhuru.

An excited Wanjiru was also quick to express her gratitude as well wish she was speaking to the president via a video call. “I wish this was a live video so that I could see you. I would like to meet you,” she said. The president responded by saying that he would think about it.

The Kazi initiative program is set to benefit over 270,000 youths. “The Kazi Mtaani national technical committee has prepared robust works plans that will see more than 270,000 Kenyans earning a Sh. 455 daily wage and engaged in more community and infrastructure development projects,” said State Department of Housing and Urban Development Principal Secretary Charles Hinga.

The first phase of Kazi Mtaani focused on informal settlements in the counties of Nairobi, Mombasa, Kiambu, Nakuru, Kisumu, Kilifi, Kwale, and Mandera.
