Technical and Vocational Training (TVET) Principal Secretary Dr Kevit Desai address media during western region of Kenya Association of Technical Training Institute exhibition, Research paper presentation and Robotic Contest in Kakamega.

The government will now register and license artisans and technicians graduating from TVET institutions in efforts to recognize them and control the industry. Speaking during a stakeholder’s forum organized by the Kenya Engineering Technology Registration Board (KETREB) and partners, Principal Secretary in the state department of Technical and Vocational Training Education Training Dr. Kevit Desai challenged the KETRB to proactively engage the artisans because the mandate of licensing them falls under it. “Artisans need to be recognized for their role in development, KETRB was formed under government and should bring stakeholders together and move to sites and involve artisans more,” said Desai. “You need to engage other boards, departments, link institutions, write standards and be involved in assessment so as to create a preposition to guide the sector,” he added. Desai also announced plans by the ministry of education through his office, to finance the board, to ensure it fully fulfils its mandate.                                                        This will offer hope after long struggle pitting the board against the Engineers Board of Kenya (EBK), where the latter has insisted in registering only university graduates neglecting those from technical institutions.
