Bandari sip Tusker to go second in KPL

Published

on

Bandari FC kept their slim Kenyan Premier League (KPL) title hopes alive with an impressive 3-1 comeback win over Tusker FC at the Mbaraki Sports Club on Thursday.

Eugene Asike headed Tusker in front inside 23 minutes but Shaban Kenga struck 10 minutes later to ensure both teams went to the break on even terms.

Yema Mwana scored his fourth goal in three games to put Bandari ahead just two minutes after the restart after capitalizing on dreadful goalkeeping mistake from Emery Mvuyekure.

Substitute Benjamin Mosha then put the icing on a spirited second half show when he struck in stoppage time to seal the victory and take Bandari to within eight points of league leaders Gor Mahia FC.

Mvuyekure was at fault again for the sloppy manner in which he conceded the last goal after spilling Abdallah Hassan’s initial attempt from a free-kick.

After being beaten by Asike, Bandari custodian Farouk Shikhalo produced a stunning stop to deny Timothy Otieno from a one-on-one situation to keep his side well in the tie.

Both sides looked sharp but it were the visitors who had plenty of opportunities to kill the game earlier on.

Having come into this match barely 24 hours after beating Chemelil 3-1 at the same venue, the hosts looked fatigued but pushed hard to grab the win.

Mbappe voted best male player in French top-flight

Published

on

Paris St Germain’s Kylian Mbappe, who has already scored 32 goals this season, was named both the best player and best Under-21 player for the 2018-19 season by his peers on Sunday.

France striker Mbappe, 20, scored twice in the penultimate round on Saturday to become the first French player in 53 years to net at least 32 goals in a Ligue 1 campaign since Philippe Gondet’s 36 for Nantes in the 1965-66 season.

“It may be time for me to have more responsibilities, it may be here at PSG, with great pleasure, or maybe somewhere else, with a new project,” Mbappe said after receiving his award.

Germany midfielder Dzsenifer Marozsan, who helped Olympique Lyonnais’ women’s team to a record-extending 13th consecutive league title and fourth straight Champions League crown, was named the best first division female player for the third time in a row.

Lille’s Christophe Galtier was voted best Ligue 1 coach of the season after taking his side to second place behind champions PSG.

Muluya rues poor Sharks form in league

Kariobangi Sharks coach William Muluya has bemoaned the team’s poor form in the SportPesa Premier League this season.

But the youthful coach has been quick to assure supporters the team will come good in the remaining games especially during the historic friendly match versus English Premier League side Everton.

A 3-2 loss to KCB in Machakos on Saturday left Sharks with an embarrassing return of a single win in their last five league matches, and a paltry eight victories in 31 matches this season.

Worse, Sharks that finished third and sixth in the past two league seasons respectively are now ranked 11th on the log with three matches left this season.

“We have lacked consistency in terms of the people who are playing because you know it’s a condensed league season. So each of the matches we played I cannot say I have fielded a formidable 11 because of injuries to some key players,” said Muluya, who was named the best coach in the Kenyan league in 2017.

The positive part of Sharks season was the triumph over Tanzania’s Yanga and Mbao, plus Kenya’s Bandari at the annual SportPesa Cup earlier this year.

The results earned the Kenyan team a historic opportunity to host Everton in Nairobi on July 7.

“Playing against Everton is not an exhibition match. To me, it’s a chance to write history and a very good opportunity for the players we have in the team and a great one for the club and its history.”

Muluya, who was born and brought up in the Korogocho slums in Nairobi, spoke to Nation Sport while distributing playing kits to youth teams in the Kits for Africa initiative in Dandora.

“This is a great initiative which will have a great impact on the community,” he said.

Pre-race favourite Sifan Hassan- the European 5,000m champion faded to fifth clocking 4:01.91 with Africa 800m champion Kenya’s Winny Chebet finishing seventh in 4:02.94 as compatriot Nelly Jepkosgei came in 10th.

It was an Ethiopian clean sweep in the men’s 5,000m with Yomif Kejelcha stunning Selemon Berega to finish the race in 13:04.16 ahead of Barega (13:04.71) while Hagus Gebrhiwet came in third.
