Prof NYong’o
Details have emerged of how a secret family meeting in Nairobi convened by Kisumu governor Anyang’ Nyong’o in last ditch attempts to draft an out-of-court agreement on the contested inheritance of their father’s Sh200 million estate ended in acrimony as renegade siblings refused Sh20 million offer each.
Nyong’o who is leading part of the family fighting the inclusion of two nephews Geoffrey Omondi Nyong’o and Kenneth Odhiambo Okuthe as co-administrators of the multimillion shillings estate resorted to the meeting in reaction to a bombshell dropped by a Kisumu court.
Prior to the rare meeting which brought together sides considered the mighty in the family tree and their exact opposite, a court in Kisumu had on October 11, last year made a landmark judgment which appointed Okuthe as a co-administrator in the lucrative estate.
In an exclusive interview with Weekly Citizen, Okuthe who is leading the group championing for the shares of the estate said the aim of the meeting was calculated at armtwisting them to stay away from the estate by dangling Sh20 million carrots to them.
To achieve this, Nyong’o roped in Bishop Onginjo of ACK Maseno South Diocese and Canon Francis Omondi of All Saints Cathedral as chief mediators in a meeting hosted at United Kenya Club in Nairobi on January 5 2019.

The meeting was attended by Nyong’o, his wife Dorothy Nyong’o, Mark Bloch and Mary Owiti while Hollywood star Lupita Nyong’o, Tavia and Esther Nyong’o joined them through video conference from Hollywood, San-Francisco and New York respectively.
According to Okuthe, both the mediators were not privy to the court deliberation appointing him as a co-administrator of the estate.
The letter that Nyong’o allegedly emailed to brothers Kenneth Okuthe and Geoffrey Nyong’o and which is in our possession reads in part: “I would like to invite both of you for a family meeting to discuss and try and resolve grievances from all sides regarding the estate of Baba Hesbon Nyong’o”.
Okuthe said this was his first opportunity to meet his uncle (Nyong’o) after many years as the governor who is the head of the family ignored many of his requests for such meetings at the initial stage of the case despite sending him over 1,000 text messages.
The meeting room at the United Kenya was tension-packed prior to it kicking off with Lupita looking a totally irritated person on the video.
The meeting started in a combative style when Susan Mudhune a director with Safaricom in her opening speech appeared to be attacking the protesting faction by stating that “Mama taught us to work hard and not depend on freebies,” Mudhune, former directors at KCB, is a sister of the governor.
And when Bloch had an opportunity to air his views, he went point black and declared that Okuthe should stop taking the family’s silence over the matter for granted, something which Okuthe noted is giving him sleepless nights as he now fears for his life.
However, when the microphone was handed to the 80-year-old Mrs Owiti to chip in, she said “I told you to act on this matter at its early stage,” before handing back the microphone.

okuthe
By this time, Okuthe and his brother Omondi known within the family as Omo were already breathing fire in reactions to previous statements by the two first speakers before Lupita interjected by allegedly calling Okuthe “a witch” who is out to trouble the family.
“My mother told me you scared me while I was two years old and now you want to scare my dad,’’ Lupita reportedly told Okuthe to the chagrin of the two mediators.
When the meeting ended prematurely Nyong’o and Mudhune led the other side of the team in rushing back to the corridors of justice where they made another application to quash last year’s judgment.
Notably, behind the scenes, events that have associated the big family inheritance war paints Nyong’o, his wife Dorothy and Mudhune as the top leading greedy characters who do not want the big family cake to be equally shared.
Okuthe and his group rates the family estate at Sh3 billion and have set their bargain at Sh100 million for each of the six of the siblings initially axed as the beneficiaries if they are to stay away from the property.
According to them, the Nyong’o team may not be willing to declare to them current value of the estate five months after the landmark court ruling that vouched for the same.
The war has exposed ugly side of the family jammed with scholars after it emerged that Dorothy has conspired to have the siblings blocked from visiting the Nyong’o mother who is said to be in ICU fighting for her life in a Nairobi Hospital.
“Dorothy has been ensuring that we be blocked from visiting our grandmother at the hospital saying we are capable of poisoning her,” lamented Okuthe while fighting back tears.
He vowed that they will stage a chaotic and embarrassing moment should the grandmother pass away without them being allowed to pay her a visit at the hospital.
The man recounted his early childhood troubles at the hands of Prof Nyong’o and his wife Dorothy when they arranged for Okuthe to be bundled to an approved school at the age of six while Omo was immediately engaged into the army services.
According to Okuthe, the gestures were long term plans by the governor’s family to have them later blocked out of the estate as in one court incident; Nyong’o argued that Okuthe was a certified criminal from his early days.
However Okuthe said he discovered ‘the gold’ after he made an attempt to Google the family empire and the internet led him to a baffling discovery of vast property worth hundreds of millions as opposed to what they were made to believe.
Armed with the knowledge, he quickly brought on board Omo who agreed to join hands in a war that is literally tearing the big family with global recognition.
