Harambee Stars defender Joash Onyango could miss the Africa Cup of Nations match opener against Algeria slated for Sunday, June 23, after reportedly picking an ankle injury during a training session.

Onyango, who has been a key defender for coach Sebastien Migne since he made his debut for Stars in 2018 when he made his Kenya debut.

Onyango played for Stars in Pre-AFCON friendly match against DR Congo a week ago and was in line to start against the Algerians in Cairo for the Group C opener.

Onyango's injury deals coach Migne a further blow leaving him with limited options at the back.

Already Brian Mandela was ruled out of the tournament with a knee injury and has since undergone surgery.

Nkana FC central defender Musa Mohamed is carrying a minor injury and coach Migne opted to rest him against DRC explaining that he did not want to take a risk by fielding the former Gor Mahia man.

This leaves coach Migne with David 'Calabar' Owino as the only experienced central defender in the team.

Joseph Okumu and Bernard Ochieng are the other available center backs but are untested at the highest level.
